Rule 18 may be the longest rule in the book, but everyone knows it as “the buoy room” rule. Its real title is “Rounding and Passing Marks and Obstructions,” and while it applies in almost all instances of rounding or passing, it takes a skilled sailor to keep every application of the rule straight. On shore, The Buoy Room’s rules are more straightforward: relax, have fun (and perhaps enjoy a bit of rum).
