What We’re Reading: Move Like Water by Hannah Stowe

As a young girl, Hannah Stowe was raised at the tide’s edge on the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales, falling asleep to the sweep of the lighthouse beam. Now in her midtwenties, working as a marine biologist and sailor, Stowe draws on her professional experiences sailing tens of thousands of miles in the North Sea, North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Celtic Sea, and the Caribbean to explore the human relationship with wild waters. Why is it, she asks, that she and so many others have been drawn to life at sea―and what might the water around us be able to teach us?

What We’re Reading: Boat Girl by Elizabeth Fescue

Written for a Young Adult Audience with a special mention of Bitter End! Fifteen-year-old Caitlin Davies’s life is challenging enough. She’s short. She’s scrawny. She prefers Evernote to Snapchat. She’s two years younger than everyone else in her grade. And now her parents are taking the family to the British Virgin Islands (BVI)—for a year—to live on a derelict sailboat, bought sight-unseen from navigationally-impaired cigar smugglers. As the first African-American to sail alone via Cape Horn through the dangerous Southern Ocean, the journey was even more special because of the inspiring message he sent to children about their dreams, education, and, above all, commitment.

Remembering a Legend

What We’re Reading: La Finca: Love, Loss, and Laundry on a Tiny Puerto Rican Island

At age forty, Parker surrendered to her Swept Away meets Swiss Family Robinson fantasy of running an inn far from her home in the Pacific Northwest. For the next twenty-plus years Parker ran La Finca Caribe, an eco-lodge in Vieques, Puerto Rico. What started as a rough-and-tumble dream grew into a paradise enjoyed by guests from around the world. Sketchbook in hand, Parker chronicled her daily adventures living with the land.

Bitter End Beats! Tito Puente: The Mambo King

Born in Spanish Harlem to Puerto Rican immigrant parents, the percussionist, composer, and bandleader helped define Latin jazz and lay the groundwork for 1970s salsa. His irresistible swirl of energy helped make his main instrument, the timbales, emblematic of Latin music in the mid-20th century.
